A mysterious cloud destroys newly built skyscrapers. Strange robotic animals steal valuable artefacts. Moench opened his stories at full tilt a seven foot Viking invades New York’s business district to kidnap an investor. However Marvel’s Doc Savage Magazine, also released to try and capitalise on the Movie was EXACTLY the Doc Savage I wanted to see.ĭistributed in the UK albeit sporadically, the novel length tales by Doug Moench and (mostly) John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga perfectly captured the characters, adventure and Pulp spirit of the books in eight issues of pure wonder. Through the passage of time and the lens of Nostalgia I actually quite enjoy it now and actually Ron’s dignified performance as Doc rings true to the spirit of the character.īut at the time it certainly wasn’t the Doc Savage I wanted to see. Sadly it was the first film I recall being disappointed in. I devoured the book (two more Corgi’s followed) and started to look forward to the Film. The book had an intriguing painted cover of Ron Ely as Doc Savage to tie in with the forthcoming Movie and the blurb on the back hooked my 12 year old self like a salmon to the line. I first discovered “ Doc Savage” within the pages of a UK Corgi reprint paperback of “The Man of Bronze” in 1975.
